What is GST in India?

GST (Goods and Services Tax), introduced on 1 July 2017, is India's most significant indirect tax reform. It replaced a complex web of central and state taxes — VAT, service tax, excise duty, entry tax — with a single, unified framework. GST operates on the principle of taxing the value addition at each stage of the supply chain, with the final tax burden falling entirely on the end consumer. Businesses collect GST on behalf of the government and can claim input tax credits for GST paid on their purchases.

GST Calculation Formula: How to Calculate GST

The calculation differs based on whether the price is GST-exclusive or GST-inclusive. For exclusive pricing (adding GST on top): GST Amount = Price × Rate% and Total = Price + GST Amount. For inclusive pricing (removing GST from the total): Base = Total / (1 + Rate/100) and GST = Total − Base. The GST collected is split equally between the central government (CGST) and the state government (SGST) for intra-state transactions.

Instantly calculate GST on any amount for any Indian slab (3%, 5%, 12%, 18%, 28%). Supports both Add GST (exclusive) and Remove GST (inclusive) modes, with CGST and SGST breakdown.

GST Calculator — Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about GST calculation, slabs, CGST, and SGST.

GST (Goods and Services Tax) is India's unified indirect tax that replaced multiple taxes like VAT, service tax, and excise duty. It has four main rate slabs: 5% (essential goods and services), 12% (standard goods), 18% (most services and manufactured goods), and 28% (luxury goods, tobacco, automobiles). Two special low slabs also apply: 3% on gold and precious metals, and 0.25% on cut and semi-polished precious and semi-precious stones. This calculator supports all six.

In GST-exclusive pricing ("Add GST" mode), the listed price does not include tax — the GST is added on top to arrive at the final customer price. In GST-inclusive pricing ("Remove GST" mode), the GST is already baked into the price. Use "Remove GST" to find out the base price and tax component when you know the final amount paid.

GST is a dual tax: CGST (Central Goods and Services Tax) goes to the central government, and SGST (State Goods and Services Tax) goes to the state government. Both are exactly half the total GST rate. For example, at 18% GST, you pay 9% as CGST and 9% as SGST. For inter-state transactions, IGST (Integrated GST) applies instead of the CGST/SGST split.

To add GST: GST Amount = Base Price × (GST Rate / 100). Total Price = Base Price + GST Amount. To remove GST from an inclusive price: Base Price = Total Price / (1 + GST Rate / 100). GST Amount = Total Price − Base Price. Our calculator does both instantly — just toggle between "Add GST" and "Remove GST."

A reverse GST calculation works backwards from a tax-inclusive total to recover the base price. The GST calculation formula for this is Base = Total / (1 + Rate/100), and the tax component is then GST = Total − Base. For example, at 18% a ₹1,180 inclusive price gives a base of ₹1,000 and GST of ₹180. Switch the toggle above to "Remove GST" and this reverse GST calculator does the back calculation instantly, showing the base, the tax, and the CGST and SGST split to the exact paise.

No — this tool calculates the tax on an invoice, not the penalties on a delayed return. Those are separate charges: under Section 50 of the CGST Act, delayed GST payment attracts interest at 18% per annum on the outstanding amount, calculated from the day after the due date until payment. Late filing additionally attracts a late fee, commonly ₹50 per day for returns with tax payable and ₹20 per day for NIL returns, subject to the prescribed cap. Use this calculator for the invoice tax, then compute interest and late fees separately on the amount it gives you.

Yes, this is a 100% free online GST calculation tool offering faster processing and exact paise precision compared to standard portals like TaxAdda. There is no sign-up, no usage limit, and every figure — base, total, CGST and SGST — is shown to two decimal places rather than rounded to whole rupees, which matters when you are reconciling an invoice.
