LIC Mutual Fund Mutual Fund & SIP Overview

This is the point that trips most people up: LIC runs two entirely separate businesses, and an LIC calculator search can mean either. LIC Mutual Fund — formally LIC Mutual Fund Asset Management Ltd — offers equity, debt and hybrid schemes exactly like any other AMC, and its units rise and fall with the market. Life Insurance Corporation of India separately sells insurance policies including endowment plans and ULIPs such as Nivesh Plus, Index Plus and SIIP. The calculator on this page models the first. If you are looking for an LIC premium calculator or an LIC maturity calculator, you are pricing the second.

How to Start a SIP in LIC

A SIP into an LIC Mutual Fund scheme is registered like any other AMC's, and is entirely separate from paying an insurance premium:

  1. 1Confirm which product you actually wantA mutual fund SIP buys market-linked units with no insurance cover. An LIC policy premium buys cover with a bonus or fund-value component. They are different purchases with different tax treatment.
  2. 2Complete KYCOne-time KYC through any SEBI-registered intermediary covers all fund houses. Insurance KYC is separate and does not carry over.
  3. 3Select the scheme and planChoose from the LIC Mutual Fund range and decide between direct and regular. Direct plans carry a lower expense ratio because no distributor commission is embedded.
  4. 4Register the SIPRegister through the LIC Mutual Fund website, a registrar such as CAMS or KFintech, or any investment platform carrying the schemes.
  5. 5Authorise the mandateUPI AutoPay or an OTM / NACH mandate authorises the monthly debit. This is not an ECS for a policy premium and cannot be used to pay one.

LIC SIP Investment Rules & Key Metrics

Operating rules for a LIC Mutual Fund SIP. Scheme returns are not shown — fund performance changes daily, and the figures that stay true are the ones below.
MetricAppliesWhat to know
Minimum SIPCommonly ₹500, some schemes ₹100Set per scheme. Unrelated to any minimum premium on an LIC insurance policy.
FrequenciesDaily, weekly, monthly, quarterlyMonthly aligns with salary credit and is what this calculator assumes.
Cut-off time3:00 PM for most schemesApplications after cut-off receive the next business day's NAV.
Lock-inNone, except ELSS at 3 yearsThis differs sharply from insurance products, where a five-year lock-in is standard on ULIPs.
What grows the valueNAV movementUnit value tracks the portfolio daily. There is no declared bonus and no guaranteed maturity sum, which is the core difference from an endowment policy.

Managing & Modifying Your LIC SIP

Because mutual fund and insurance products behave so differently after purchase, it is worth being precise about which rules apply here:

  • A mutual fund SIP can be paused, stopped or restarted without penalty. Stopping does not forfeit anything — units already bought remain yours.
  • An LIC policy premium works oppositely: missing premiums can lapse the policy and surrendering early usually returns less than paid in.
  • An LIC child plan calculator and this tool answer different questions. A child plan carries a guarantee and a death benefit; a mutual fund SIP carries neither and no assured maturity value.
  • Nivesh Plus and Index Plus are ULIPs. Searches for an LIC Nivesh Plus calculator, an LIC Nivesh Plus returns calculator or an LIC Index Plus returns calculator all price a policy net of mortality and policy administration charges — deductions a mutual fund SIP does not levy at all.
  • Capital gains on mutual fund units are taxed on redemption. Insurance maturity proceeds follow a separate regime under the Income Tax Act.

Used as an LIC mutual fund calculator, the tool above projects the growth of monthly SIP instalments into an LIC MF scheme at an expected CAGR. It does not compute policy maturity, bonus accrual or surrender value — for those you need LIC's own policy calculators.

Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about the LIC Mutual Fund SIP Calculator.

No. LIC Mutual Fund Asset Management runs market-linked mutual fund schemes whose units rise and fall with the portfolio, with no insurance cover attached. Life Insurance Corporation of India separately sells insurance — endowment plans, term cover and ULIPs such as Nivesh Plus and Index Plus. They share a brand and nothing else structurally: different regulators, different tax treatment, different exit rules. This calculator models the mutual fund.

No. An LIC premium calculator works out what you must pay for a chosen sum assured and term, and an LIC maturity calculator estimates the payout including any declared bonus. Both are insurance calculations built on guarantees and mortality assumptions. This tool projects mutual fund SIP growth from NAV compounding, where nothing is guaranteed. Use LIC's own policy tools for premium and maturity figures.

A mutual fund SIP buys units at whatever the NAV is on each instalment date, and your value is simply units held multiplied by current NAV — it moves daily, in both directions, with no floor. A traditional LIC endowment policy instead accrues declared bonuses on the sum assured and pays a defined maturity amount. A ULIP sits between the two, investing in funds but deducting mortality and policy charges first, which is why a ULIP and a mutual fund at identical gross returns do not produce identical outcomes.

Commonly ₹500 a month, with some schemes accepting ₹100. The minimum is set per scheme in the scheme information document rather than fixed across the fund house, and it has no relationship to the minimum premium on any LIC insurance policy.

LIC Mutual Fund offers a standard range across equity, debt and hybrid categories, including index schemes and an ELSS for Section 80C. Any open-ended scheme in the range accepts a SIP. Note that the ELSS carries a three-year lock-in per instalment, and that each instalment's lock-in is counted from its own date rather than from when the SIP started.
