How to Open an SCSS Account at India Post
India Post is the original and most widely used channel for SCSS. Accounts are opened in person at the parent post office and passbook-based.
- 1Visit your nearest head post office or a designated sub-post office that handles savings schemes.
- 2Collect and fill Form Account-1 (the common account opening form for Post Office savings schemes), ticking SCSS as the scheme.
- 3Attach two passport-size photographs, PAN, Aadhaar, and age proof establishing that you are 60 or above (or 55-60 if claiming superannuation relaxation).
- 4For a superannuation or VRS claim, attach the employer retirement certificate and apply within one month of receiving retirement benefits.
- 5Deposit the amount by cheque or in cash if below the permitted cash threshold. Interest starts from the date the cheque is realised.
- 6Submit Form-2 to nominate a beneficiary, then collect your SCSS passbook from the counter.
Quarterly interest is credited directly to your Post Office Savings Account at the same branch, so keep that account active.
SCSS is a Government of India scheme — the interest rate is identical at every authorised institution.

Post Office SCSS Calculator — Frequently Asked Questions
Opening and operating an SCSS account with India Post.
No. India Post requires SCSS accounts to be opened in person at the post office using Form Account-1, because age proof and signature verification are done at the counter. Once the account is running, you can view credits through your linked Post Office Savings Account, but the opening itself is branch-only.
Yes, in practice. India Post credits SCSS quarterly interest into a linked Post Office Savings Account held at the same office. If you do not already have one, it is opened alongside your SCSS account.
Yes. SCSS accounts are portable between authorised institutions. Submit a transfer request at your parent post office with your passbook; the account moves with its original opening date and interest rate intact, so the maturity date does not change.
No. The SCSS rate is fixed by the Ministry of Finance and revised quarterly. Every authorised institution, including India Post, pays exactly the same rate, so returns are identical regardless of where you open the account.
